Do You Want A Flake With That?

At the end of 2015 I moved home to Cape Town after a 13 year stint living in Dublin. Looking through our archives I couldn’t help but be reminded of the time I spent a couple of years ago filming Mr Cheeko, my local ice-cream van man. Most people’s idea of having an ice-cream would be on a warm summer’s day by the seaside. At the time I wanted to show the other side of this ideal. The result was a short documentary chosen as part of the official selection of the 2013 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

The reality is that every evening, hail, rain or shine, Ray works his run around Dublin’s inner city flats. And it’s by no means an easy job.

We were living in Irishtown at the time, and it is in many ways my love-letter to the area, as I tried to capture, not only the beauty of the streets at night, but also a sense of community that is so strong.

I was fascinated by the fact that Ray knew so many of his customers by name. And that in some cases he’d seen three generations growing up during his time working his route.
